Futures Foundation gets 36 computers from local partnerships

CARLSBAD — The COVID-19 pandemic upended the way the world has had to adapt to new learning and working environments. And for non-profits, times have been equally as tough as unemployment and the economic fallout has led to major cuts in donations and funding. But for some, such as the San Diego Futures Foundation, demand is at an all-time high.

To Claude Jones, the tech scene in the early 2000’s presented opportunities for anyone who knew how to program. His “big” opportunity came in 2001 when he was recruited for a software engineering job for a then hot predictive analytics company in San Diego called HNC Software.

Now, the San Diego Tech Hub has exploded to about 2,000 and is also actively engaging in charitable giving and engagement with other nonprofits. The tech hub is a collective of business professionals spanning the workforce spectrum, from communications, tech and construction, to name a few, who also use technology to maximize their network, efficiency, productivity and find talent.

When Dan Hendricks and his wife first started Open Source Maker Labs in 2014, it was a family business intended to help do-it-yourself inventors and entrepreneurs who were focused on science and technology. It has since evolved into a space supporting entrepreneurs and start-up businesses looking to create prototypes of their products, while also providing experience and education for people entering the workforce.

San Diego Tech Hub off to strong start
San Diego’s tech sector is booming as more and more talent and businesses set up in the county. But for Claude Jones, the community was lacking in connecting talent, business, organizations and other like-minded individuals. So, last month he launched the San Diego Tech Hub, while recruiting 11 others to form the leadership team.
